Why Sleep Is on Everyone’s Mind

How ErgoActive® Could Help

Sleep Is Emerging as a Core Wellness Priority

Across age groups, consumers are becoming more aware of how stress, digital overload, and busy lifestyles affect their ability to wind down and sleep well. Many report feeling fatigued during the day and dissatisfied with the quality of their rest. As sleep increasingly becomes a marker of emotional well-being and overall health, people are actively seeking solutions that support restorative sleep (2025 FMCG Gurus).

The need is substantial: an estimated 50-70 million Americans struggle with chronic sleep disorders, and 1 in 3 adults do not regularly achieve the recommended amount of sleep needed to support their long-term health (NHLBI website).

These numbers reflect more than occasional restless nights. Poor sleep affects mood, cognitive performance, physical recovery, and over time, healthy aging itself.

In this landscape, ingredients that support the biological foundation of healthy sleep, rather than acting as sedatives, are gaining strong interest.

A Growing Demand for Non-Sedative, Non-Pharmacologic Sleep Support

Consumers want products that help them:

  • Manage daily stress
  • Improve nighttime rest
  • Support emotional well-being
  • Maintain long-term energy and mental clarity

This shift is accelerating interest in science-backed nutritional solutions that improve sleep quality by addressing the body’s underlying biological pathways, including stress resilience, oxidative balance, inflammation regulation, and cellular recovery.

That’s where ErgoActive® ergothioneine enters the conversation.

What Is Ergothioneine, and Why It Matters for Sleep

Ergothioneine is a natural antioxidant amino acid found exclusively in the diet and most abundantly in mushrooms.  It is known for its stability and ability to accumulate in human tissues, through active transport into cells via a dedicated ergothioneine transporter (OCTN1).

Because of this, ergothioneine tends to concentrate where oxidative stress and metabolic demand are high, including brain cells, mitochondria, immune cells and many other cell types. These are the same systems highly relevant to sleep regulation, recovery, stress response, and healthy aging. In other words, ergothioneine supports the cellular environment that underlies healthy sleep physiology.

Clinical Evidence: How Ergothioneine May Support Sleep

Growing clinical data indicate that ergothioneine may support healthier, more restorative sleep through multiple biological pathways.

Trial 1: 20 mg/day for four weeks (older adults with sleep complaints) (Katsube et al, 2022)

A placebo-controlled clinical trial in 92 healthy older adults with subjective sleep complaints found that 20 mg/day of ergothioneine for four weeks resulted in:

  • Improved subjective sleep quality
  • Increased N2 sleep stage duration (EEG)
  • Reduced N1 stage sleep
  • Fewer nighttime awakenings

Metabolomic profiling showed:

  • Reduced serum glutamate
  • Reduced stress-related hormones
  • Increased antioxidant and anti-inflammatory metabolites

These results suggest that ergothioneine influences aspects of both subjective and objective sleep

Trial 2: 5–10 mg/day, with modeled optimization and 8 mg follow-up (Okumura et al, 2025)

A newer exploratory, placebo-controlled study evaluated lower daily doses of ergothioneine. In the first phase, 5 mg or 10 mg/day for eight weeks helped determine plasma kinetics. Modeling predicted that 8 mg/day for 16 weeks would reach plasma levels comparable to the earlier 20 mg/day trial.

In the second phase, 8 mg/day showed significant benefits on the Oguri–Shirakawa–Azumi sleep questionnaire, improving:

  • Factor IV: “Refreshing” (restorative feeling)
  • Factor V: “Sleep Length”

This suggests lower daily intakes may meaningfully support sleep quality and morning recovery.

Trial 3: ErgoActive® 10 mg & 25 mg/day for 16 weeks (healthy older adults) (Zajac et al, 2025)

In our recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, daily supplementation with ErgoActive® L-ergothioneine (10 mg or 25 mg) led to significant improvements in subjective sleep quality, measured using the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ).  The main benefit suggested that the 25 mg/day ergothioneine significantly improved subjective ease of getting to sleep, with positive trends seen with the 10 mg/day dose.

This finding further supports ergothioneine’s potential to support various aspects of sleep, including a person’s perceived ability to get to sleep.

Why This Matters Now

With nearly half of Americans reporting sleep stress, and many reluctant to rely on sedatives or pharmaceuticals, nutritional solutions like ergothioneine represent a timely, demand-driven opportunity.

For formulators and supplement brands, ErgoActive® offers a science-grounded, FDA GRAS, clinically-tested, non-habit-forming ingredient for sleep support products.

For consumers, it provides a holistic way to support sleep health, leveraging antioxidant and cellular-protective mechanisms that align with healthy aging.
